Room in Brookline's elementary schools
K-8 enrollment of October 1, 2026, against today's sections or each building's classrooms. The marked building is 26 Pleasant St., proposed under Warrant Article 15.
Today's sections: the sections running now, as of October 1, 2026. Filling them needs no new classroom or teacher. Building classrooms: each building's general classrooms (see the table below); filling them may need teachers.
Students per classroom: Guideline is the School Committee's class-size guideline, 22 in K-2 and 25 in grades 3-8 (Driscoll 24 in 3-8; Pierce its own, lower, for its temporary rooms), applied grade by grade for today's sections. For building classrooms, which can't be split by grade, it's the average over nine grades, 24 (Driscoll 23.3). 1, 2 or 3 under lowers every guideline by that many students, since the guideline is a ceiling, not a target: in January 2017, with 5,466 K-8 students, classes averaged 21 and the School Department warned that an average of 24 was where the schools were headed without a new building. Three under is 19 in K-2 and 22 in grades 3-8, about that 2017 average; a grade above the lower number counts as full. The Advisory Committee's FY27 projection found 945 open at guideline in today's sections.
Homes it fits: open seats divided by K-8 children per home (0.244 school children per home, times the K-8 share of enrollment).
Buffer zones were traced from the Town's August 2026 map, since the Town's GIS layer could not be reached; they're accurate to tens of meters, not to the address. Seats are by grade, so a district can have room overall but a full grade.
